Mood swings is a natural phenomenon. Your mood can vary according to how your day unfolds. However, if your reaction or mood, swings greatly and far too much, it is a reason to stop and think, what causes mood swings.

Before we head towards depicting what causes mood swings, let’s learn the difference between a mood swing and emotions.

Nowadays, mood swings have become relatively common, yet people confuse them with emotions. Often at times, a person who gets angry a lot or cries a lot is said to have mood swings.

Where in actual that person is just emotional.

Mood swings is when, a person goes from being happy to sad in a minute’s time, or vice versa without any particular reason.

What Causes Sudden Mood Changes and Anger?

There are several causes for mood swings and sudden rage in people. The causes are primarily categorized into – psychiatric and non-psychiatric disorders.

Which are further divided down into categories according to gender and age.

Psychiatric reasons being: schizophrenia, bipolar disease, personality disorder, drug abuse, depression etc.

Non-psychiatric: medicinal effects, neurotransmitters imbalance, tumors in brain, hormonal imbalance, puberty etc.

What Causes Mood Swings in Men?

As often as women experience mood swings, men do too. Yes, women may experience it on a far greater scale compared to men. But that doesn’t mean men don’t go through that irritated feeling at all.

Their mood swings are comparatively more composed and will only last a while.

The two main reasons that cause mood swings in men are:

  1. High-stress levels
  2. Low testosterone levels OR high estrogen levels

What Causes Mood Swings in Women?

Mood swings are comparatively common in women than men. And thus there are a lot more reasons that may cause their mood, to swing.

  1. Hormonal imbalance, being the top most reason.
  2. Menopause
  3. Pregnancy
  4. Stress

Are some of the most common believed causes of mood swings, in women.

How to Control Mood Swings?

Mood swings are legitimate and can happen to anyone, any day. Yes, they are a handful to deal with, but not impossible. Most of the time, the hormonal imbalance is blamed to be the cause, but we seldom realize that hormonal imbalance itself is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle, in most cases. Thus, can be changed.

The first step towards treating your mood swings is:

1. Eating Healthy

As you may have heard – We are what we EAT. Believe it or not, but the food we eat effects our system directly. Your body needs nutrient to keep it alive and working up to the mark.

Eat foods that are organic and filled with nutrients, rather than preservatives that not only take away the food's nutrients but the added toxins cause a chemical imbalance.

Eat foods rich in good fats. Yes, you heard that right. The fat-free diet that you have been following may be the reason for your moodiness. Our brain needs the good fat. Without it, it may start to eat itself, as in cases of Alzheimer.

Avoid salt and sugar. Too much of anything is unhealthy, especially the refined sugar and salts we have been using avidly in our meals. Too much sugar in the blood vessels, makes one go hyper. So is the case with salt, which is a leading cause for high blood pressure.

Eat more fruits and veggies. Especially the green ones. Invest into herbs such as turmeric, rosemary, basil, garlic, which are great antioxidants and also have anti-inflammatory properties. Best for breaking down the toxins and help flushing them out of your system.

Drink more and more water. Just like 70% of the Earth is made up of water, our bodies are too. Our bodies require at least 4 liters of water a day. Anything less than that is sure to create an imbalance.

2. Exercise

Just like rest, our body requires an adequate amount of exercise, each day too. Imagine a machine that works 18 hours a day and takes rest for the other 6 hours. Take away the 6 hours of rest from it and it will be dysfunctional.

The same way, take away the 18 hours of work each day, and put it to rest. After let’s say 2 weeks, put it back to work again, would it be able to work as efficiently?

The answer’s no.

Likewise, when you ditch exercise, you are making your body lose efficiency. A brisk walk in the park, a round or two of cycling, a sweaty gym session or a yoga class thrice a week is necessary to keep both your body as well as your mind fit.

Did you know, exercising helps elevate your body’s endorphin levels? Which help beat the menopause blues?

Also, did you know morning jogs can be beneficial in so many other ways? Find out here.

3. Take Rest

Just as your body requires food to function properly, it also requires the right amount of sleep. It is necessary for one, to sleep at least 8-10 hours, each night. Best time being, from 8pm to 5am.

It is also scientifically proven to take a nap during the mid-day, just like a power nap. Lasting for as short or as long as 7 to 15 minutes.

4. Other Solutions

Declutter your life by bringing in some sort of a routine. Invest your time in things you like doing, such as reading, painting etc.

Massage therapies and acupuncture are also known for decreasing stress levels and anxiety. Hence, help lessen the amount of mood swings.

Here are a few more solutions that help achieve healthy brain function thus resulting in less/no mood swings.

Medication for Mood Swings and Irritability

Mood swings and irritability caused by underlying diseases such as ADHD, bipolar disease, schizophrenia and the likes require advise and treatment from a proper medical practitioner.

Whereas mood swings caused by other reasons such as weakness, hormonal imbalance and stress may not require a proper treatment but medications in the form of supplements work to improve mood swings in such cases.

  • Vitamins such as B12, C and D are usually recommended.
  • Omega 3 tablets or fish oil tablets are also widely used for the purpose.
  • Herbal medications are also found useful.
